Thanksgiving and Black Friday may still seem like a long way away, but in eCommerce terms, many of the larger businesses will be planning and preparing for the holiday season over the next few weeks if they haven’t already.
But in the current global situation it begs the question, what will happen around the holiday season in 2020?
E-commerce has seen a huge growth globally during the Pandemic as more people have been forced to shop online rather than visit stores. Even now with lockdowns easing in certain states their is still for some an unease around being around lots of others. Almost like a mild form of a mass agoraphobia.
Which begs the question, will Black Friday as we know it be able to happen in a global pandemic?
Stores Choosing To Close For Thanksgiving
As it stands right now both Walmart (including Sam’s Club) and Target have announced that they will be closing for Thanksgiving this year.
“This year more than ever, a joyful holiday will be inseparable from a safe one, and we’re continuing to adjust our plans to deliver ease, value and the joy of the season in a way that only Target can,” – Brian Cornell, Chief Executive, Target
It seems reasonable that we will see more announcements similar to these over the next few weeks along these similar lines.
So whilst it sounds like doors won’t be getting busted in physical bricks and mortar stores for Black Friday 2020 it begs the question will retailers, marketplaces and logistics companies be able to meet the demand driven by online?
How To Prepare For An Unknown Holiday Season?
For many online sellers November and December are they key months of the year where the majority of the years revenues are made.
Target also announced in their statement that they will be rolling out their holiday deals starting in October to try and extend the sales period and that they will also be making 20,000 more products available for online delivery to reduce the need to visit stores and experience crowds.
The biggest question will be how will logistics companies be able to handle the demand, we know that Coronavirus caught many off guard earlier this year resulting in large delays, not just with domestic deliveries but international too.
