eCommerce technology continues to evolve as online retailers search for better and easier ways to present products.
Augmented Reality is the next holy grail in eCommerce as it is poised to transform mobile shopping from a 2D experience to a 3D experience.
Imagine if you looked at a vase for your living room side table and you could place the product on an image of your living room table and rotate it in all directions.
Or how about you are interested in a new bike, but want to see the bike from all angles and in full detail.
Shopify and Apple iOS 12
With the release of iOS 12 this week for compatible Apple devices, Shopify merchants can now serve AR 3D models in the Safari browser on iOS 12 powered phones and tablets.
There is no need for a separate mobile app or clunky headset to bring a whole new shopping experience to buyers.
By utilizing Apple’s AR Quick Look technology, Shopify is trying to make it easier for their online merchants to embrace this new shopping technology.
While it has been possible to use other AR technologies to showcase products on Shopify in 3D, with Apple AR Quick Look, the number of shoppers who have an out-of-the-box compatible device to view AR modeled products will dramatically increase.
Apple AR Quick Look compatible devices (must run iOS 12) include:
- iPhone XS
- iPhone XS Max
- iPhone XR
- iPhone X
- iPhone 8
- iPhone 8 Plus
- iPhone 7
- iPhone 7 Plus
- iPhone 6s
- iPhone 6s Plus
- iPhone SE
- iPad Pro (all models)
- iPad (6th generation)
- iPad (5th generation)
Certainly, newer models will offer a far better experience with AR Quick Look, but Apple made the technology compatible with some popular older models will help its adaption.
