Magento Announces Direct Integration To Amazon Marketplace

Magento amazon integration

Today we have some breaking and exciting news from the guys at Magento.  They announced a native integration with the Amazon Marketplace platform.

This is exciting news for a number of reasons, especially if you are a user of Magento.  Being able to use Magento as multi-channel software isn’t new functionality as this is what UnderstandingE have been teaching for a number of years.

In order to do this merchants had to previously rely on 3rd party extensions to add the marketplace functionality.  This is set to change this year as Magento have built their own direct integration into the Amazon marketplace.

Magento Adds Full Amazon Integration

Back in 2017 we covered the news that Shopify had announced an Amazon integration, but at the time we felt it was a very much a watered down integration as it only covered Amazon.com and transactions in U.S. dollars.

This is where Magento has gone one step further as in their press release they state:

“Automatically match products and list them across Amazon’s North American, APAC, and European marketplaces” Magento Press Release

This means that Magento merchants will have a full Amazon integration to all Amazon marketplaces globally.

You can check out the full press release on this here.

This is a fantastic move for Magento as it shows they are aware of where eCommerce businesses are selling and clearly Amazon is a platform that they could no longer ignore, whilst their competition was also working on native integrations.

In a recent Magento study, 92 percent of merchants surveyed said that they expect to grow their Amazon sales channel revenue over the next twelve months.

As you know, Amazon already commands a huge share of online retail sales (44% to be exact) and that number is expected to grow. This news has huge implications for Magento merchants looking to grow their marketplace presence and compete, both in the U.S. and internationally.

“With more than half of all consumers starting product searches directly on marketplaces like Amazon, this is a tremendous opportunity for merchants to help consumers discover their brand and buy their products…This enhanced capability from Magento helps merchants simplify the listing process, and measure the value gained from this important channel.” Mark Lavelle, CEO of Magento Commerce.

Great News For Magento Users!

This is fantastic news for existing users of Magento and also a huge tick in the box for other sellers trying to decide which eCommerce platform they should use.

I reached out to Magento for clarification on a  few questions I had for clarity which I can share with you here:

Is this going to be a native integration into Magento, so not powered by a third party?

Yes, this is a native integration.

Is this going to be for Magento 2 only or for Magento 1.9 as well?

The new integration is available for Magento 2 only.

Will this include an integration for FBA (Fulfilled by Amazon)?

A separate integration for FBA with Magento will be available later this year.

Will this also allow sellers to sell across Amazon marketplaces globally, such as UK, Germany, Japan, Australia etc?

Yes the integration supports all of Amazon’s global marketplaces including the Amazon Business marketplace

Is there an estimated launch date for this functionality?

The integration is currently in an EAP (early access program) and is available to merchants and system integrators to leverage on request. The functionality will be generally available later this year.

I did record a video talking about this which you can see here. *Note the video was recorded before I had the answers to some of the questions I ask*

Editors Note

Whilst I understand you might be excited about this functionality I would personally recommend holding off the Early Access Program unless you have a setup you are happy to test with.

Whilst the new shiny feature is always tempting to play with, I would hate for the a bug to appear and potentially cause disruption to your business or jeopardise your Amazon seller account.

Let the testers do what they do and wait for the general availability later this year.

  1. When FBA integration is included, would that mean that you can have your own stock in your own warehouses, plus stock in Amazon’s warehouses in the different regions? That would be great!

    • We don’t know yet how this will look, and it will be a separate integration after the initial one, but still it does sound promising, I can only imagine that it would need to have this sort of functionality, so we will keep our eyes out and update you when we know more.
