Brett McLaughlin has joined Volusion, the ecommerce platform built specifically for the needs of small- and medium-sized businesses, as Chief Technology Officer.
In his new role, McLaughlin will oversee Volusion’s technology strategy, infrastructure, and development, build a world-class team of engineers, and lead the organization across functions, solving for the needs of merchant customers and ecosystem partners.
McLaughlin comes to Volusion with over 20 years of experience working in technology, with particular expertise in cloud computing, and a passion for distilling down and communicating complex, technical topics.
Armed With Programming and Engineering Tools
He is the author of Java and XML, which remains the go-to reference work for using the Java programming language to parse, transform, and consume XML, and opened the door to him joining O’Reilly Media as Senior Editor.
During his tenure, he was jointly responsible for the company’s enterprise and programming technical publishing, overseeing and growing the bestselling Head First brand, and launching O’Reilly’s live instructional video program.
He most recently worked at Element 84, a software engineering and design firm that builds high performance systems for corporate and government clients.
As Principal Engineer, he focused on scalable cloud platforms and staging and distributing petabyte-scale data stores.
McLaughlin also led projects on contracts with NASA’s Earth Science Group and Amazon Web Services, giving him unique vision and expertise in the practical concerns of cloud-based architectures and large data sets.
“I’ve been writing about and building websites and enterprise platforms for most of my career, and I’m thrilled to join a storied leader in the industry as CTO. I like to look at everything I work on from a people perspective – when founders are able to get their startup off the ground and provide stability for their families, or can hire more engineers or employees because of the revenue our software helps provide them – that drives my passion. And nowhere is this more inherent than at Volusion.”
“We’re completely committed to drawing a distinct through line of immediate value from our platform to small business. This includes everyone from our founders and their trusted partners, to a single shopper who wants to make an important purchase quickly and smoothly from their mobile device.”
