LCL stands for Less-than-Container-Load and is a term used for shipments not large enough to fill a standard cargo container. In most cases, LCL container shipments are palletized and loaded into freight containers moving between same origin and destination port.

Formerly, the term also applied to Less-than-Car-Load (Car in this case meaning railway car). LCL freight by railcar was often sorted and distributed into different railway cars at intermediate railway terminals en route to the final destination.
