At first glance you may read Wasabi, the green “Japanese Horseradish” you get at Sushi restaurants. But the word is Wabi-sabi and it has nothing to do with food!
Wabi-sabi is a world view centered on the acceptance of transience and imperfection. The aesthetic is sometimes described as one of beauty that is imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete.
With an emphasis on organic materials, softly textured fabrics, and natural shapes, wabi-sabi is about embracing authenticity. In home decor that translates to hand-built ceramics, wrinkled linen sheets, and gently gnarled wood.
“In life, as well as in home decorating, I firmly believe in keeping it real. Which is a tall order in the age of pervasive Instagram perfection, when staged photos, strong filters, and universally flattering lighting reign supreme. As a real human, with a real life, and occasionally, a really messy apartment, I’m ready for a change—and I don’t think I’m alone. Raise your hand: Who’s ready not to make the bed?”

JEWELRY: Choker Revamp
Chokers are making a comeback but with a greater flare and new modern twists on accessories.
The newest choker designs incorporate whimsical elements like dangling quarts stones, fringe, or medallion details. Some style may also offer the option to tie the loose ends.
“Over the last couple of years we’ve seen a huge resurgence of ’90s influences, from slime to scrunchies to chokers – one of the most popular jewelry styles of 2017. This year, the choker will undergo a revamp, from the minimalist, slim styles of the last few years to more playful statement pieces. We’re already starting to see examples of this evolution on Etsy.”

EARRINGS: Mismatched or Mix-and-Match
Why be symmetrical and when you can be asymmetrical? That seems to be the fashion statement behind mismatched earrings.
Some believe this new trend may be an extension of body piercings and ear piercings to show individuality and unconventionalism.
Etsy already has over 5,500 search results for “mismatched earrings” and that number seems to be growing. And it isn’t just one trend or style; there is an infinity of options possible from using different sizes, colors, shapes, and designs.
Isom Johnson believes this style will become a staple in 2018.
WEDDINGS: Traditional Attire is Out / Alternative Attire is In
Wedding gowns are so old-school and more modern brides are picking non-traditional choices such as pantsuits, jumpsuits, capes, you name it.
The trend started back in 2014 but is now expanding to the wedding party as well. Shapes are in from the tuxedo-inspired to the romper-ish. From the bride to the flower girl, skirts are for black and white pictures and everyone can now stand out in colorful and modern designs.
While 99 percent of brides still prefer a traditional wedding party, two-thirds are now choosing a personalized approach to bridal party attire.
NEXT HOT HUE: Ultra Violet
Pantone color of the year is Ultra Violet, and the Etsy community is embracing it. Look for it to show up in many categories. According to Etsy’s editors “The color—a rich, bright purple—communicates originality, ingenuity, and visionary thinking.”
Let’s hope that is a good omen for the new year.
