During last night’s eBay community chat, a seller asked if Managed Payments had lifted restrictions on the category the seller sells in (coins) because notices keep popping up in the seller’s Seller Hub to sign up for the service.
The eBay moderator confirmed that coins is still a restricted category and said, “[sellers] will not be required to register for managed payments until these categories are compatible. Until then, there is no action required and sellers can continue to sell on eBay as they do today.”
Clearly, the fact this question was asked by a seller who had been on eBay for years, the promotional message to sign up for Managed Payments is confusing sellers that mostly sell in categories that are on the not allowed list.
This confusing promotional marketing of Managed Payments unfortunately only increases the distrust some sellers have about Managed Payments. Therefore, sellers need to be aware that regardless of eBay’s promotional messages, they need to first confirm the categories in which they sell in are not on the restricted list.
As of December 2020, these are the restricted categories that Managed Payments cannot be used for:
- Adult only items, including movies, video games, and photographs
- Auction services
- Coins & paper money (only Exonumia, and Publications & Supplies are allowed)
- Gift cards & coupons
- Lodging, timeshares, vacation packages, and car rentals
- Memberships for campground and RV parks
- Motor vehicles
- Tickets for travel, events, or experiences
eBay maintains the list of restricted Managed Payments categories here.
