Amazon Utilizing Self-Driving Trucks on I-10?

A few days ago a Reddit user posted an image of an autonomous Amazon truck on I-10 and wondered if Amazon is testing driverless trucks.

The poster of the image did not specify the location, but it looks like this image may be from around the I-10 Palm Springs, CA area.

Turns out, CNBC also found this Reddit post and asked both companies about this project as Embark is known to operate driverless truck services on the I-10 corridor.

According to CNBC, Embark CEO Alex Rodrigues said, “Embark moves freight for a number of major companies on the I-10, however we cannot discuss any company specifically as our relationships are confidential.”

And an Amazon spokesperson said to CNBC, “We are always innovating and working with innovative companies to improve the customer experience and safety of our team. We think successful over-the-road autonomy will create safer roadways and a better work environment for drivers on long-haul runs.”

A severe driver shortage in the US that is causing labor rates to rise drives many companies to look at autonomous trucks as an option to move freight.

Certainly, Amazon seems poised to be at the forefront to embrace this technology if it can help make their operations more efficient.
